"I have always wanted to do something in medicine after growing up with a mom who taught nursing. I am originally from the Detroit area and attended the University of Michigan-Dearborn earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a pre-medicine focus and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
During my time at U of M – Dearborn, my mom wrote a course on complementary medicine and told me there was a school in Seattle called Bastyr University and my life would forever be changed. Bastyr teaches a different kind of medicine called Naturopathy that focuses on the root cause of illness and not on symptoms only. Not only could I use my prescriptive rights to help my patients, but Naturopathic Doctors are also trained in botanical medicine, counseling, osteopathic manipulations, and other physical medicine techniques.
At Bastyr, I completed specialty rotations in counseling, diabetes and cardiovascular health, pain management, environmental medicine, adolescent medicine, mind-body medicine/biofeedback, underserved/homeless youth, and Digestive Health/SIBO. I completed elective courses in Kinesio Taping, STD treatment and prevention, mind-body/biofeedback, advanced diabetes and vascular disease, IV therapy, and a licensing course in massage therapy. I also went to Germany for a 2-week hydrotherapy class.
In my last year at Bastyr, I spent over 250 hours outside of class and clinical rotations precepting with specialists in men’s health, physical medicine, chiropractic care, mind-body/biofeedback, emergency medicine at Kirkland’s Evergreen Emergency Department, and STD treatment and prevention at the Harborview/King County STD Clinic.
