"Dr. Carvounis was born in Vancouver, B.C., Canada and grew up in Athens, Greece. Dr. Carvounis went to Cambridge for preclinical medicine then to Oxford for clinical medicine and then came to the U.S. for training in ophthalmology in 2001. Dr. Carvounis has been proud to call Houston, TX his home since 2005, is married to Dr. Sepi Carvounis, DDS and they had their first daughter, Eleni in August 2016. Dr. Carvounis is a third generation eye surgeon.
Achievements in Education: Dr. Carvounis has trained 10 retina specialists and over 60 ophthalmologists. In appreciation of his dedication to resident education, Dr. Carvounis was awarded the Baylor College of Medicine Dan B. Jones Teaching Award in 2013. Dr. Carvounis has served as Senior Instructor at courses for ophthalmologists and retina specialists on macular surgery, diabetic vitrectomy and management of dislocated intraocular lenses at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for over 6 years and at the World Ophthalmology Congress in Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Carvounis has also taught ophthalmologists and retina specialists in regional meetings such as the Cullen Course (Houston, TX) and the AVTT meeting (San Antonio and Ft. Worth)
Outside interests: Dr. Carvounis is a competitive tennis player and enjoys horse-riding. Dr. Carvounis also enjoys snowboarding in the winter and loves swimming and windsurfing in the summer. Dr. Carvounis is an avid reader of literature, loves the opera and country music and enjoys traveling."
