"Robert James Dougherty Jr., MD, is the medical director at Genesis Functional Medicine in Bastrop, Texas. As a dedicated and skilled physician, he provides exceptional care to his patients.
Dr. Dougherty graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in psychobiology from Quinnipiac University in Mount Carmel, Connecticut. During his time there, he was on the dean’s list all four years, served as the president of the Psychobiology Club, and received inclusion on the list of Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities.
After earning his undergraduate degree, Dr. Dougherty served the country as an officer in the United States Navy. He began his service as a fleet naval aviator before moving on to flight instructor and finished as a total quality improvement coordinator.
Dr. Dougherty then earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio and went on to complete the Corpus Christi Family Practice Residency Program at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Texas.
During his time in medical school, Dr. Dougherty was one of eight medical students nationally selected to perform aerospace medicine research at the Johnson Space Center in Houston as part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Aerospace Medicine Clerkship. He helped to refine and author the decompression checklist that the flight surgeon at NASA’s Mission Control Center uses during all scheduled and emergency spacewalks.
As a physician, Dr. Doughtery has worked in a variety of medical settings, including emergency rooms, hospitals, hospices, and private practices. His multidisciplinary background enables him to achieve solutions from a number of different approaches.
