As a board certified geriatrician as well as an internist, Dr Raber realizes the importance in keeping an elderly patient out of the hospital. The numerous risks associated with hospitalization, such as acquired infections, increased risk of confusion, bed sores/decubiti, and other complications, prompted Dr. Raber to implement the HOUSE CALL program. Elderly patients who were too frail or ill and were unable to travel to the doctor’s office in many instances ended up being unnecessarily hospitalized. In such situations, hospitalization could have been avoided if the patient was seen by a physician in a timely manner.
