"I grew up in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. I attended Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine from 2010-2014, where I received my medical degree. It may surprise people reading, but I was actually un-insured throughout my four years of medical school. Despite being surrounded by hundreds of doctors in some of the best hospitals, I could not seek care. At the time, my wife worked as a paralegal for a law firm and we made too much money to qualify for medicaid, but not enough to actually afford meaningful insurance. This experience shaped my view of the separation of healthcare and health insurance in America.
Upon finishing medical school and having both grown up in Illinois, I asked my wife if she ever wanted to move- now would be the perfect opportunity. Having loved the diverse outdoor activities available and friendliness of all Michiganders, we subsequently moved to Michigan.
I completed my post-graduate training in Family Medicine at Beaumont Hospital in Wayne Michigan. I am a triple board certified physician with certifications in Family Medicine and also Addiction Medicine. I practice both pediatric and adult primary care, seeing everyone from newborns through teenage years onto adults, specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of acute and chronic conditions.
I spent time in those huge, uncaring hospital systems where I found it was the office administrators making patient care decisions, telling me who I could and could not treat. The ‘final straw’ for me was when I wanted to start incorporating treatment for addiction- that is so prevalent in all our communities- and the hospital brass literally told me “We don’t want those people here.” Well, ‘those people‘ were my family, my friends, and my colleagues. I had enough of the hospital elitist attitude, it was time to move on.
I set out to open my own family medicine and addiction medicine clinic, Beyond Primary Care. Beyond Primary Care is modeled after the ‘direct primary care’ style of practice where I do not accept insurance reimbursements. Through the elimination of unnecessary overhead found in insurance-based clinics, I instead work directly for my patients in a way that makes my services more affordable and accessible. This mission has allowed me to bring healthcare back to what it once was, a service dedicated to patient care. Since 2018, I have also served as the Medical Director for a local addiction recovery center in Southeast Michigan."
