Joseph Kannam, MD

"Dr. Kannam, is Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham (BID-Needham). He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He was recently appointed program director of the cardiovascular fellowship program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the American Heart Association. 

Dr. Kannam graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Biology from Boston University, and received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine in 1992 and a fellowship in Cardiology in 1995, both at Beth Israel Hospital He joined BIDMC’s cardiology faculty in 1995. 


As Chief of Cardiology at BID-Needham, Dr Kannam provides advanced cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment services to patients and oversees the growth and development of the hospital’s comprehensive community-based cardiology program. As fellowship program director, he is responsible for the training and development for the cardiovascular trainees at BIDMC. 

Dr. Kannam has been quite active with the American Heart Assocation, a volunteer organization with the mission of reducing the prevalence of cardiovascular disease. He is immediate past president of the Board of Directors of the Boston Chapter of the American Heart Association. He makes annual trips to Haiti with the organization Hearts Around the World to train local physicians. 

Dr. Kannam is considered a leading authority on coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, and congestive heart failure. He won the Patient’s Choice Award and is listed in Boston Magazine’s Top Doctors."
