"Dr. Abreu Velez joined Georgia Dermatopathology Associates in 2007 as Director of Research and brings to the practice an exceptional background in dermatology, dermatoimmunology, and medical research. She is responsible for all research activities and for implementing and co-directing our immunodermatology service. Dr. Abreu Velez’s clinical and research credentials give our practice the expertise and experience to provide outstanding diagnostic and research quality. A native of Colombia, South America, Dr. Abreu Velez is a licensed M.D., board certified in dermatology. Her training included a dermatoimmunology fellowship under Luis A. Diaz, M.D. She also holds a Ph.D. degree in immunology, granted jointly by the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of Antioquia in Colombia.
Professionally, Dr. Abreu Velez has been in private practice as a clinical and surgical dermatologist and has served in numerous academic and teaching roles at the Institute of Primary Immunodeficiencies at the University of Antioquia and at the Colombian Institute for Tropical Diseases. A widely published scientist in North and South America and Europe, her research accomplishments include characterization or the periplakin and envoplakin proteins and the development of an ELISA diagnostic test to screen for El Bagre endemic pemphigus foliaceus, a blistering disease in Colombia."
