Dr. Hawes graduated summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame and then with honors from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Postgraduate training in medicine/surgery, ophthalmology, and ophthalmic plastic surgery was completed at the University of Colorado and the University of Wisconsin.

Dr. Hawes was in private practice in Denver since 1980 and served as Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He has taught and supervised postgraduate physicians in training for more than 25 years, and was one of the preceptors of an oculo-facial plastic surgery  fellowship training program coordinated by the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center."
