"Mahsa Karavan, MD, MPH
My goal is to serve as an expert guide for my patients, while also focusing on what they need and want from their care. I believe in empowering my patients with education and scientific information, and working together to help them make important decisions about their health. I strive to build an open, trusting, and judgement-free physician-patient relationship where my patients can communicate their needs freely. Whether their skin disorder is straightforward or complex, I am there to accompany them on their journey, and to offer them a welcoming experience. Given my own cultural background, I am highly motivated to help my patients overcome cultural barriers, and to receive the best care possible.
Dr. Karavan has completed extensive research in both public health and clinical subjects; her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, and she has given presentations at meetings across the country. Her most recent research has focused on treatment of acne scarring with lasers.
During her residency in Salt Lake City, she learned that area has the nation’s highest rate of melanoma diagnosis (and deaths), and that firefighters are at even higher risk of skin cancer compared to the general population. This knowledge motivated her to design an intervention program for local firefighters that includes customized education, skin cancer screenings, and a free annual supply of sunscreen for all SLC firefighters. “It’s been extremely rewarding to provide this annual program for the area’s hard working firefighters.”
Dr. Karavan was born in Iran and moved to the U.S. at age 13. She loves spending time with family and friends, and has a passion for travel. Dr. Karavan also enjoys water sports, dancing, and cooking."
