"Lynn Yonge, M.D. could never imagine a life spent indoors. A lifelong outdoorsman and Eagle Scout, Yonge has figured out a way to combine his medical practice and love of the wilderness, giving him the best of both worlds. A member of the Board of Directors of the Wilderness Medical Society, Yonge was among the first physicians worldwide to become a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. “The practical applications of wilderness medicine are many,” Yonge says. “From knowing how to care for patients during a natural disaster, to using the outdoors to teach at-risk teens responsibility, nature offers an infinite number of lessons.” Yonge’s path to medical school was as winding as the Alabama rivers he enjoys paddling. He graduated from The University of Alabama with a degree in nursing. After working five years as a critical care nurse, Yonge decided to pursue his medical degree from The University of South Alabama where he also completed his family practice residency. He practiced in Foley, Ala. for nine years before moving to Bay Medical in 1998. With a special interest in adolescents, in addition to his private practice, Yonge is the medical director for the Baldwin County juvenile intervention program (Camp Horizon) and the medical director for Strickland Youth Center in Mobile County. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians, serves as the faculty advisor for the USA Wilderness Medicine Student Interest Group, assistant clinical professor for the USA College of Medicine, and as a clinical preceptor for nurse practitioner students from UAB."
